When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

I turned 50 this year and in a time of gym closers, social distancing, mask wearing, canceled holiday trips, etc, we settled on a staycation birthday celebration. I initially didn’t want to do anything because it’s so depressing, and I’m a social person, but so glad we stayed at the Mandarin Oriental. Service was superb and Ava and Bonita did am amazing job. The chef made me a carrot cake which was divine. I can now never have it anywhere else. In addition he made me dark chocolate peanut butter truffles. Need I say more! We were upgraded and that made our stay even better! Thank you Mandarin Oriental, Bonita and Ava for such an amazing experience! Oh, and they gave me a box of chocolates to share with our children when we left the hotel.

The arrival experienced till I checked out indeed leave me with lasting memories. The reception staff was courteous and i was greeted by Mr. Danny Lai. From our small talk, got to know he is celebrating his 47th years working with MOHKG. When an employee is happy with the company means they will also happy to serve the guest. I got a room with the Harbour view and the room is in excellent shape with a good shower pressure and most important the Housekeeping team that kept the room clean and even the small little details are taken care of. The restaurant staff, Steven never failed to addressed my name every time he clear my dishes. He even provide me with some magazines to have me occupied as i am dining alone. I like the hotel instant messaging communication with the staff. All my request are being fulfilled even before my arrival. This communication channel is very convenient for me. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

My wife and I had a fantastic time staying here on a three night stay in October of last year as part of a birthday trip I took her on. I had heard in the past that the staff of the historic Mandarin Oriental on Connaught Rd. are some of the best. All of these expectations were more than surpassed. Upon arrival, we were surprised to find that we had been upgraded to a fantastic suite complete with enormous traditional deep-soaking tub with a view of the Harbor from floor to ceiling windows, and Joe Malone bath amenities. We were also delighted to have a welcome cake from the Mandarin Cake Shop for my wife's birthday. Vivian Law deserves particular mention for taking incredibly good care of us throughout our entire stay, from assisting us with restaurant recommendations, MTR routes, to finding us a portable transformer (so we could charge our devices in hong kong outlets) and more. Probably the best aspect of this hotel, however, is that in the degree to which the staff managed to combine the kind of close friendliness we typically only experienced at boutique hotels with the luxury that one can only expect from an established five star. When we left for a hike, a show or just a trip around, staff always remembered and wanted to ask us how it went, and anticipated where we might need some help, but never in a way that would seem intrusive. While the hotel (though renovated) shows some signs of its age, the gym facilities are large and modern. Some miscellaneous notes: If you are staying on Hong Kong island, either for business of pleasure, this is probably the best-located five-star and has the advantage of great harbor views over its sister hotel. While the clipper lounge has a wide buffet selection I would recommend Cafe Causette for breakfast. Michelin-starred Man Wah more than lives up to its reputation.

Hong Kong is the home to so many high end hotels. Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, St. Regis, Rosewood, but as for the most luxurious, it’d be the MO and the Peninsula. This MO is very well decorated and considerate. The location is good, convenient for transportation and shopping. Not to mention my mom used to a fan of Mr. Leslie Cheung as well.
